How to move your Day One journal to Dayleaf

Tutorial · August 29, 2026

Your journal might be the most personal file you own — a decade of mornings, trips, and small victories. Moving it should never cost money or lose a single photo. Dayleaf's Day One import is free, built in, and handles even multi-gigabyte archives.

Step 1 — Export from Day One

  1. In Day One, open Settings → Export.
  2. Choose JSON (this format preserves everything: entries, photos, videos, audio).
  3. Save the exported ZIP to the Files app.

Step 2 — Import into Dayleaf

  1. In Dayleaf, open Settings → Import from Day One.
  2. Tap Choose File and pick your ZIP. Your photos come along automatically.
💡 Huge journal? Unzip the archive in the Files app first (just tap the ZIP), then choose the unzipped folder in Dayleaf — much more reliable for multi-gigabyte archives.

What comes across

After the import, back everything up with one tap to your own iCloud (Settings → Back Up to iCloud). Your journal, your storage, no subscription required.
